Over the last few years I have returned to working with green unseasoned timber. In the early 1990's I made lots of work using greenwood techniques - bowls, dishes and other treen, and a series of steam-bent ladderback chairs. I loved workimg in this way but I got diverted from it - I have three daughters!
A couple of years ago I started to reuse the old tools. I bought some hook knives for spoon carving and started carving again. I'm really enjoying the freedom, simplicity and directness of the tools - just a small axe and a couple of knives. Working this way is like drawing. You are making marks in material and the simplicity of the object means there is nowhere to hide. I also like being able to carry everything I need in a small tool roll; it means I am not tied to the workshop.
